The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G.I. Katsigras Museum
The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G.I. Katsigras Museum was established in 1983. Since its first year, the Gallery has been fully integrated into the local society, having also contributed to the full establishment of fine arts in the city of Larissa and its wider region in numerous was.
The donation of G.I. Katsigras
In 1981 the doctor and collector G.I. Katsigras donated his remarkable collection to the Municipality of Larissa. The collection is one of the most significant in the country and unique in the periphery. It comprises 781 paintings, carvings and drafts of important Greek artists for the period between 1850 and 1950.
After his death, his donation to the Gallery was enriched by 1170 books on art, as well as the invaluable furniture which belonged to the renowned Heinrich Schliemann bought by the collector in 1955. As for his personal medical library, it was donated to the Medical Association of Larissa. His 4500 literature books were donated to the Municipality of Larissa.

At the new building of the Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G.I. Katsigras Museum, which was inaugurated in 2003, in the area of Neapoli, part of the collection is displayed with paintings of the following artists: Lytras, Iakovidis, Volanakis, Maleas, Parthenis, Triantafillidis, Gounaropoulos, Asteriadis, Vasiliou, Psihopedis, Bouzianis, Sikeliotis, Tassos and various others as well as Heinrich Schliemann’s furniture.
Through a profound appeal to the senses, the visitor is able to follow the course of Modern Greek Art, the evolution of trends and techniques and the influences it received by many schools and European fashions within a specific historical and social context.
The Artistic Library
In 2007, the Artistic Library of the museum was inaugurated with numerous books of various interests in original and often rare publications.
In the Gallery, there is also a shop available which sells: copies of paintings of the collection, post cards, books on art, ornamental items, items with stamped pictures like T-shirts, cups, puzzles, creations of the Benaki museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art – Foundation N.P. Goulandris and jewellery of well-known artists etc.
The future aims of the Gallery are: collaborations with museums, galleries, Educational Foundations in Greece and abroad, exhibitions, invitations to artists, conferences on the History of Art, a bigger publishing range, meetings of sculptors of twin cities, symposium of Applied Arts, meetings of Municipal Artistic Workshops, Bienalle of new artists.
The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G.I. Katsigras Museum has the ambition to be a meeting point of the society of Larissa, to widen the expectations of the public, as far as Fine Arts are concerned, to awaken Larissa and to be the axis with an international impact.
