Contemporary Art in Larissa
After 1983, when the new Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - Museum G. I. Katsigra was founded, the paintings of Larissian and other artists were given the place they deserved in its halls (presently the Hatzigiannio Municipal Cultural Centre, soon to become the new building of the Art Gallery of Larissa), while periodic art exhibitions are being held on the ground floor of the Town Hall and at the Centre of Fine Arts, which was established in 1995.
However, the town of Larissa can also boast notable contemporary artists that live and work either in Larissa or in Athens.
Some of these are the following:
Hristos Samaras(born 1940), painter, sculptor and restorer at the Archaeological Department, he studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, has been distinguished for his work, participated in many exhibitions and created many busts.
Giorgos Lazongas, (born 1945) studied architecture and painting and taught Painting at the Architecture School of Thessaloniki. He represented Greece at great exhibitions abroad and his works can be found in private and public collections and museums.
Andreas Giannoutsos (born 1953) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, participated in group exhibitions, his works are in many private and public Collections, and he was stage designer for the Thessalian Theatre and teaches in a Secondary School.
Giorgos Ziakas (born 1940) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, at the workshop of G. Moralis and the workshop of V. Vassiliadis. He has participated in group exhibitions, has won awards and his name is mainly connected with the field of stage design.
Kostas Dais (born 1954) studied at the School of Fine Arts of Tinos and is a painter and sculptor.
Kleanthis Hatzinikos (born 1949) studied and worked with G. Tsarouhis and participated in many exhibitions.
Thanasis Totsikas (born 1952, at Nikaia of Larissa) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts of Paris in 1970. He participated in european events for contemporary art such as in 1982 at Europalia, in 1992 at IX Documenta and in 1997, he represented Greece at Biennale of Venice.
Tasos Misouras (born 1963) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, at the workshop of G. Moralis and D. Mitaras. He continued his post graduate studies at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts of Paris, at the workshop of Prof. Leonardo Cremonini.
Lazaros Maravas (born1964)graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts at Nikos Kesanlis workshop. In 1988 he worked in the studio of the Santa Cruz University, U.S.A. In 1989 he studied stage decor in the workshop of Vasiliadis. In 1990 he received his graduate degree at Los Angeles .
