Regions of ecological interest with appreciable ecosystems of Larissa city
In the region the biotopes with natural vegetation that is distinguished, are the banks and the sides of Penios river and its the drainage and irrigating channels, that run through cultivated extents.
In the Municipality of Larissa do not exist legislated or protected regions of the most important categories, as are the regions NATURA 2000 and areas of special protection of bird fauna (SPA). Are existing, however, regions of ecological interest with appreciable ecosystems, what are the following:
• A part of the region of the Municipality of Larissa and concretely the Municipal Apartment of Terpsithea is characterized as Biotope CORINE and concretely the region Livadia, with Code AG0030017. It is described in the Bank of Elements of the Greek Nature ("FILOTIS") of the National Technical University of Athens as one of the most important biotopes with big value for the natural environment. The region constitutes residue of riverside forest lengthwise of Penios river, near Larissa. The vegetation is mainly arborised. The fauna of the region, is consist of appreciable birds.
Even if the region is characterized as biotope, is downgraded with rapid rhythms, as is threatened by the human interventions and concretely by the cutting woods with final aim the claim of the grounds or for the creation of new cultivable extents or for the pasturage and by the cast of litter, decreasing the esthetics of the landscape and causing in this way problems in the organisms of the natural ecosystem.
• The river Penios (Wetland with Code 140116000, according to the Greek Centre of Biotopes-Wetlands), constitutes sovereign presence in the wider region of Larissa. In the riverside forests of Penios and its tributaries maintains a appreciable fauna sush as (Accipiter brevipes), small immigratory falcons, that are nesting there and they will abandon the region, if these forests are destroyed. Also, infrequent (Ciconia nigra) are nesting and are nourished there. This two species are protected from the annex I of the directive 79/409/EOK "For the maintenance of the wild birds". Another appreciable infrequent species of the fauna of this ecosystem is (Lutra lutra), which the last populations are still surviving in the cleaner departments of this rivers. Apart from area of nesting and existence for a lot of species of fauna, this narrow bands of vegetation constitute also corridors of communication and immigration(corridors). A department like this of riverside forest is found in the riverside area of Penios and is extended by the city of Larissa up the narrow pass of Rodia and then up to the entry of the gorge of Tempi.
• In the wider region of the Municipality of Larissa and concretely the region of Terpsithea, is existing a important species of fauna: Lesser Kestrel(Falco naumanni). This type is included in the Red Book of Threatened Vertebrates of Greece, as vulnerable. The very numerous presence of this specie in the wider region has led to the characterization of a big region of the Thessalian Plain, as Important Region for Birds (IBA). It deserves to marked that, in the Thessalian Plain is existing today the biggest and most important population of Lesser Kestrel. As other species of wild fauna, Lesser Kestrel lives near humans, is nesting in the holes of tile roofs of the buildings in flat settlements, that are surrounded by agricultural cultivations and meadows, as precisely it happens in the Municipality of Larissa. Lesser Kestrels prefer to chase in open extents with cultivations of cereals, pasture lands and fallows, where abound their beloved spoil, the big insects and the harmful, for the green crops, locusts. The thickets in or round the settlements are important for Lesser Kestrels, that is assembled there at teams.
