The primary sector of the economy
The city of Larissa is located in the centre of intensely rural area. The Prefecture of Larissa has the biggest cultivated extent from all the prefectures of Greece (2.384,9 s. km, elements of 2001). Even if in Larissa the employment in the primary sector possesses only the 4,67 %, its economy, because its position, is influenced considerably by it.
Despite the general reduction of the rate of the participation of the primary sector in the total GNP, that is caused by the pressures in the agriculture, in the restriction of the rural income, in the reduction of agricultural professions and the effort of the reformation of the productive activity, the Prefecture of Larissa has bigger rate of participation in relation with the Region of Thessaly. The same situation is also presented in relation with the total of country. This ascertainment leads to the conclusion that the Prefecture of Larissa proves its capacity in the primary sector of production, irrelevantly with its general reduction.
The flat and fertile ground, the satisfactory percentage of irrigated extents, the relatively big middle size of the parcels and the high point of the mechanisation of the cultivations ensure generally increased produce. The primary sector is composed by a lot of cultivations, such as industrial plants with main the cotton, cereals, barley, corn, crops, sugar beets, tobacco, tree-cultivations (apples, peaches, pears, almonds e.c.) and vineyards.
Equally appreciable is also the livestock-farming, which participates with a big percentage in the general rural product of the Prefecture and the country and renders the Prefecture of Larissa second in this sector. The more important sector of the livestock-farming is the sheeps and goats farming and follows the cows farming with the production of milk and meat, that covers the needs of the region and part of the needs of the country and the pigs farming, that assembles an important number of organised units, the products of which are intended for consumption and for trade. Also in the Prefecture of Larissa is produced a big part of Greek cheese products, contributing in the strengthening of the livestock-farming and the avoiding of the desolation of the countryside. Totally in the Prefecture are produced annually above of 17.300 tons of cheeses of various types with the 85% of the quantity to corresponds to products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)
The Prefecture of Larissa in the economic year 2001 was the 1st producer region of cotton, 2nd in the production of apples, wheat and milk with 20%, 10% and 8% respectively, 3rd in peaches with 3%, 4th in tomatoes and meat with 9% and 6,4% respectively, 5th in cheese with 5% and 7th in tobacco with 4,7% of the production.
