In the spring of 1975, Anna Vagena (actor) with Kostas Tsianos (director and artistic director of Thessalian Theatre) and Giorgos Ziakas (stage-designer) -all of them from Larissa but working in Athens- having the vision of decentralisation, they began the first discussions for the creation of a theatre, which would grab a part of the professional theatrical scene from Athens to the province.

In November 1975, the statute of the Thessalian Intellectual Course was deposited in the Court of the First Instance and the first Peripheral Theatre of the country was a reality. 152 founding members participated in the constitution of the Municipal Peripheral Theatre of Larissa, among them: Manos Chatzidakis, Iakovos Kampanellis, Dimitra Galani, Theodoros Aggelopoulos and many more, who with their presence they expressed the will and the effort of the city and generally of the region.

For eight years -with no subsidy from the State or the Municipality- the Theatre toured all over the Thessalian plain and climbed over the most distant mountainous villages. However, the first period of the theatre started to end.

The conditions that were formed led to the transformation of the Thessalian Intellectual Course to the Municipal Peripheral Theatre in 1983. A second period began. The Theatre was now subsidised by the Municipality of Larissa and the Ministry of Culture and that way it achieved to offer great performances, to have two theatrical scenes in Larissa and to tour all the year.

It is the unique Municipal Theatre that was presented in the "Festival of Epidaurus" with the tragedies of Evripidis "Ilektra", "Ifigeneia in Tavrois" and the tragedy of Aischillos "Choifores" that was characterized as stations in the research of the Ancient Greek drama.

The DH.PE.THE of Larissa is the only one that had represented our country in a Cultural Capital (in the Amverse with Evripidi’s "Ilektra") and had attendances in a lot of festivals in the abroad.

Finally, a remarkable step in the artistic course of the theatre was the creation of the "Amateur Scene" and the "Children's Scene" in 1986 and the acquisition of their own place in 1991 in the Mill of Pappa. The DH.PE.THE of Larissa organises also various of parallel events every year, such as presentations of local writers, artists etc.
