Katsigras Georgios (1914-1998)

Member of the Katsigras family, which started its course from Filipoupoli of Bulgaria, an important trading centre of the Balkans. He was a surgeon, a supporter of the Resistance, an art lover and a donor of works of art.

He studied medicine at the University of Athens, where he obtained his Doctorate in surgery. During the German Occupation he was arrested by the Italians and was imprisoned in Larissa and Athens. Later he settled permanently in Larissa, where he established a surgery, which since 1987 has housed the Medical School of the University of Thessaly.

He was distinguished for his - inconceivable by many - modesty and he was indefatigable in pursuing his activities to the end of his life. He had a sensitive aesthetic taste and obtained a rare invaluable collection of paintings, engravings and designs, about 700 works of Greek artists, which he lavished on his home town Larissa laying the foundations for the creation of the cultural body ┬źMunicipal Art Gallery of Larissa - Museum G. I. Katsigra┬╗, which became an important contribution to the increase of the fine arts education of the place. The paintings of the Collection cover a broad period of neohellenic painting and engraving, if we take into account the age of the oldest artist (1768-1834).

That same collection also includes personal items (desk) of the archaeologist of Troy and Mycenae, Heinrich Schliemann. His donation also included 1,000 illustrated deluxe volumes of books, with the biographies of Greek and foreign artists, drawings and photographed works of theirs.

Georgios Katsigras is considered to be a Great Son of the Town of Larissa and is the epitome of a pure patriot and a worthy scientist.
